Liquor License for RoPa? Yes, Please!

We received this notice in the mail a couple weeks ago regarding RoPa, the new restaurant going in where Cafe Suron used to be. (I should have posted it sooner but I am a travelin' fool lately.) My take is: Yes, we want RoPa to have a liquor license. I would most definitely enjoy a glass of wine or a cocktail with some delicious Mediterranean food. BYOBs are a pain in the rear, as bringing a bottle of wine along requires planning and forethought that I lack.

Pursuant to section 4-60-050 of the Chicago Municipal code, the city is required to send public notice of a new package goods, tavern, or incidental license application to all legal voters within 250 feet of the proposed location. All objections must be received by the Department of Business Affairs and Licensing/Local Liquor Control Commission within 40 days of the date of the application shown above. If received by the 40th day, your comments will be taken into consideration by the Mayor's License Commission before any decision is rendered on the issuance of the license. In the event a hearing is commenced in this matter, you may be required to provide testimony in person to support your complaint or comment.

I can't imagine why anyone would want this place to not have a liquor license, except for a generalized prejudice against liquor for any reason.

I hope they get it quickly. I walked past the place this evening on my way to view the beach wall. People were busily working on renovations.

I think it's just as well for them that their opening was delayed till summer- March is a lousy time to open a new business. Summer gets things off to a much better start.

We walked by there today as well, and it sure looks like they have a lot left to do!

As far as a March open date, if they had opened, they would have had time to work out any bugs before summer. :) As it stands now, they don't have long before it won't even be summer any more.

Al, I think money is probably tighter than they'd reckoned on, and that is the root of their difficulties. They're doing a lot of expensive work in there.

NOBODY is getting financing for anything right now. Strange- 3 years ago, any yokel who could lie on a loan app could get a $300K mortgage, but now, a respectable, established manufacturer in New Jersey is having trouble getting just that much so they can order a crucial piece of robotic equipment from an outfit here in Chicago.

I wish all the new businesses in this area all the luck in the world, because they are sure as hell going to need it in this economic climate.
